In a public space outside of Stockholm, fallen pieces of wood from a diseased oak lie on the ground. It is one of many trees that, as a result of warmer winters, has rotted from within and died. The oak’s heartwood, which is the part of the tree that traditionally has been used by the industry, has after a fungal infection slowly been pulverised and lost its load-bearing capacity. A shell of surface wood remains, nature’s response to the consequences of our consumer society.
VED is a material-based project, where I have utilised fallen wood that has been rejected, and had been intended to be burned.
They are subjects rather than objects, and act as testimonies of the time we live in. Fragments of a tree that tell a story — about the time and place where it grew — twists and ‘defects’ characterised by weather, wind, climate change, exterior attacks, parasites and what it is like to live in a natural symbiosis.
På en offentlig plats strax utanför Stockholm ligger fallved från en sjuk ek. Det är ett träd av många, som till följd av varmare vintrar, ruttnat inifrån och dött. Ekens mörka kärnved, den del av trädet som traditionellt sett används i industrin, har efter svampangrepp förlorat sin bärighet och sakta pulvriserats. Kvar återstår ett skal av ytved – som naturens svar på konsumtionssamhällets följder.
VED är ett materialbaserat projekt, där jag tagit tillvara på fallved som förkastats och var tänkt att eldas upp.
De är subjekt snarare än objekt, och verkar som vittnesmål för tiden vi lever i. Det är fragment av ett träd som berättar en historia – om tiden och platsen det växt på – vridningar och “defekter” präglade av väder, vind, klimatförändringar, yttre angrepp, parasiter och vad det innebär att leva i en naturlig symbios.
