The past year has been distinctive. People all over the world have had to do many things remotely. A number of the students’ degree projects in 2021 are about where we work and how we can meet. Yet there is also a focus on designing for sustainable development, something which characterises industrial design education at Konstfack as well.
The students are asking new questions that shed light on current challenges, while also reflecting on how their proposals can function in different situations. In the design process, they consider nature, animals and people, and create prototypes, conduct user studies and experiments in collaboration with others. They examine and discuss how and where products should be manufactured, from what materials, how they can be repaired and recycled. By designing and embodying their proposals, designers can not only create practical solutions to problems but also inspire ideas about how we can relate to our surroundings in different and sometimes unexpected ways.
The students in the Industrial Design programme have worked with many different subjects this year in their degree projects. These include a multi-purpose tool for ski care, an ergonomic dentist chair, a garden tool for digging in heavy soil, furniture for activity-based living, an interior that brings new life to old boats, products made of salt, a method kit for product development, inclusive rooms for meetings with victims of violence, furniture for urban reflection, an oasis in the community space, a game that help strengthen a culture of consent in the schools, a home audio system, a social meeting place for office environments, a mobile outdoor office, rain sculptures for children, and butterfly homes in urban lampposts.

The teachers at the Industrial Design Bachelor’s Programme
Det senaste året har varit speciellt, många på jorden har behövt göra mycket på distans. Flera studenters examensarbeten 2021 handlar om var vi arbetar och hur vi kan mötas. Samtidigt finns ett fokus på design för hållbar utveckling vilket också präglar utbildningen i industridesign på Konstfack.
Studenterna ställer nya frågor som sätter ljus på aktuella utmaningar, samtidigt som de reflekterar kring hur deras förslag kan fungera i olika situationer. I designprocessen tar de hänsyn till natur, djur och människor och skapar prototyper, genomför användarstudier och experiment i samverkan med andra. De resonerar kring hur och var produkten ska tillverkas, av vilka material, hur den kan lagas och hur den återvinns. Genom att gestalta och materialisera förslag kan designers både skapa praktiska lösningar på problem, men även väcka idéer kring hur vi kan förhålla oss till vår omgivning på olika och ibland oväntade sätt.
På Industridesign arbetar studenterna i årets examensarbeten med många olika ämnen såsom ett multiverktyg för skidvård, en ergonomisk tandläkarstol, en grep för odling i tung jord, möbler för aktivitetsbaserat boende, en interiör som ger gamla båtar nytt liv, produkter av salt, ett metod-kit för produktutveckling, inkluderande rum för möten med våldsutsatta, möbel för reflektion i staden, en oas i samhällsrummet, produkter som hjälper till att stärka samtyckeskulturen i skolan, ljudsystem för hemmet, en social mötesplats för kontorsmiljöer, ett mobilt utomhuskontor, lekskulpturer som synliggör regnets kretslopp samt fjärilshem i stadens lyktstolpar.
